SORRENTO · ITALY
Lemon groves, blue water, the long way round the bay.
Capri day trips and Amalfi Coast boats. Pompeii and Vesuvius up the train line. Limoncello, lemon farms and pizza in a Sorrento kitchen.
The Capri day
Across the bay first.
If you’ve only got one day, take this one. The Capri crossing every traveller makes.
The classics
Sorrento’s Most Popular Day Tours
Capri, Amalfi, Positano, Pompeii. The day trips Sorrento was made to base.
Sorrento is the pivot
Three directions out of town.
Sorrento isn’t really one trip — it’s three. Boats west to Capri. The train north to Pompeii and Vesuvius. The coast road south to Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. A week here, and you do all three.
West · Across the bay
Capri & the Islands
Across the water to the limestone island. Grotta Azzurra by morning row-boat, the Faraglioni stacks by speedboat, Anacapri by chairlift, the harbour town and the quiet side. Most travellers make this crossing within the first two days.

North · Up the train line
Pompeii & Vesuvius
Forty minutes north on the Circumvesuviana. First the buried city — frescoes, casts, paved streets where carts left grooves. Then up the volcano that buried it. You can stand on the crater rim of Europe’s only active mainland volcano and see the bay you came from.

South · Down the cliffs
The Amalfi Coast
The road that hugs the cliffs — Positano stacked above its beach, Amalfi’s striped duomo, Ravello’s gardens above the sea. Faster (and far prettier) by boat than by bus on a busy summer day. The whole coast is UNESCO listed.

By place
Pick a corner of the Bay of Naples.
Sorrento for the base. Capri for the morning boat. Positano for the cliffs. Amalfi for the cathedral. Ravello for the gardens above. Anacapri for the slow side of the island.
Only on this peninsula
The lemon side of Sorrento.
Sfusato Sorrentino lemons are IGP-protected — they only grow on this stretch of the Sorrentine Peninsula. The peel goes into real limoncello, the juice into granitas, the pulp into delizia al limone. A morning in one of the lemon-grove kitchens and the south’s cooking starts to make sense.
Limoncello at the source
Tasting flights at family distilleries that have been steeping Sfusato peel in pure spirit for three generations.
Cooking with the lemon
A morning in a Sorrento kitchen — pasta, pizza, and delizia al limone made with the IGP fruit.
Walk the pergolas
Hand-built chestnut pergolas, knotted in the same pattern since the 1700s. Pickers still go up wooden ladders to cut the fruit.
By activity
Or pick how you want to spend the day.
Boats if you want Capri. Trains if you want Pompeii. Limoncello and pizza if you want the kitchen. Vesuvius if you want the climb. Path of the Gods if you want the walk.
